Experimenting with canal cycling on the Monmouth and Brecon Canal

As the dust began to settle from all the changes since the diagnosis, I began to give some thought on how I'd adapt my coastal walking to my new circumstances.  Wales seemed the perfect place to begin as it was there I was most recently hiking along the coast. Mick and Sharon were the obvious choices for companions as they had come with me on some of the early stages walking in Wales. We stayed at a lovely AirBnB in Nant-y-derry not far at all from the Monmouth and Brecon Canal. We had a lovely drive up and stopped in Usk to look around and have lunch.  Our first stretch ran from Pencroesoped down to Croes-y-pant - probably about 4 kms. It was rather later than we wanted to start but the light shining through the trees and off the water was lovely. The dogs loved the tow path, though they were a bit suspicious at the start of the little bicycle. Both thought it might be a good idea to try the water but were strongly discouraged.

On the Friday, we braved the rain - and it did rain ALL DAY. It wasn't raining too badly during the stretch this time from Dan-yr-hoel down to Pencroesoped. The walk/cycle turned out to be longer than expected however when we discovered the key to the car at the bottom was still in the car at the top!! Back to the BnB to shower and get warm then we headed off to Abergavenny to tour around a bit there.

Saturday we packed up to leave and thought we might head out to look at Raglan Castle which was very impressive. Note to self to be more careful on grass!!! Our final canal walk/cycle was from Croes-y-pant to Mamhilad and back - our only there and back again trip but parking was just too awkward at Mamhilad!

So, canals it will be - there is still a lot of the country I haven't seen yet! If you would like to join me on a stretch of canal, I plan to head out as often as I can.
